Behind the scenes of Living Nativity in San Damiano d’Asti

Today, I’m taking you behind the scenes of the Living Nativity Scene in San Damiano d’Asti, part of the “Il Magico Paese di Natale” events, together with Govone and Asti. The Living Nativity is scheduled for Sundays on December 1, 8, and 15, a period when San Damiano d’Asti will also host other Christmas initiatives. In the photos, you can see me in an alternate role, dressed as a “Runner Elf”.
As a good elf who can’t stand still, I’m giving you an exclusive preview of the “behind-the-scenes” preparations for the Living Nativity Scene in San Damiano d’Asti. I slipped into the preparations at such a picturesque spot that I’m sure it’ll make you want to visit. The Nativity is organized by the San Damiano Palio Committee in collaboration with the Municipality, the Pro Loco, and the SS Cosma and Damiano Parish.

The Living Nativity Scene in San Damiano d’Asti takes place in the Borgo dei Sutè, between Santi Cosma e Damiano Square and the scenic cellars and tunnels winding beneath the village. These spaces open to visitors only for this event. From King Herod’s tower to the animal courtyard, the ancient trades, and scenes from the Annunciation to the Nativity, you can take a journey not only through the story of Jesus’ birth but also into San Damiano d’Asti’s past. This is thanks to the rediscovery of the underground cellars, brought back to life by a dedicated group of San Damiano volunteers who work hard to preserve this captivating yet fragile treasure.

The places I’m exploring will soon fill with around a hundred actors performing short theatrical scenes to portray the Nativity and ancient trades. Every detail is meticulously attended to, recreating an atmosphere from another era, with passion, dedication, and precision.
Besides the spots I’ve shown you, there’s much more to admire and be pleasantly surprised by—but I can’t reveal everything, can I? Otherwise, I wouldn’t be a proper elf! A bit of mischief is essential, so rather than showing you and telling you more, I invite you to come visit the Living Nativity in San Damiano on December 1, 8, and 15, from 2.00 pm to 7.00 pm! It’s a free event!
